Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho
The River of No Return - named for the original sweep scow boats from the mid-1800’s. These flat bottomed boats averaged 26’-38’ in length, and were built of lumber that was to be transported down the Middle Fork, into the Main Salmon, and disassembled for use upon arrival in Shoup, Riggins or Lewiston. Men would return for other journeys, but the boats never did.
